Can the shark anatomy help in saving seabirds? lives?

Fisheries use long lines loaded with barbed hooks to catch huge amounts of fish. Unfortunately, sharks and particularly seabirds can become victims as they tend to go either for the bait or the fish. In doing so, they often get caught in the lines, get injured and sometimes die from the severity of their injuries.

Even endangered species such as the black petrel can be victimized which does not help the weakening numbers of specimens left in their specie. But the question that haunts everybody?s mind is: ?What can we do about it??

Well some fishermen experimented with three products: salt water, shark liver oil and vegetable oil. They soon witnessed a difference between each product. As they continuously drip the each product around their fishing boat, to ensure a continuous flow as they have soon noticed that if irregular or stopped, the seabirds take it as a sudden invitation for lunch time; they have noticed important variables between each product.

For example, when using the saltwater, the amount of diving seabirds was of approximately 40 compared to 50 when using vegetable oil and 2 birds or so, with the use of shark liver oil. And this all happened during a period of 9 minutes.

Another positive point that was noticed by the fisheries using the shark liver oil is the fact that the amount of catches did not diminish whatsoever.

While fishermen even thought that vegetable oil actually attracted the seabirds, the shark liver oil actually repelled them so much that they would be soon out of sight. They also noticed that the seabirds? reaction did not have anything to do with their natural fear of sharks but in fact were repelled by the stench resulting by the shark liver oil.

Despite the fact that this mixture is quite effective in reducing the number of casualties, experts caution the fisheries in the possible negative effects on the environment if used both regularly and in large quantities. Since the efficiency of this natural product, experts hope to discover soon chemicals that would have the same results while not endangering shark species.

My name is Sylvie Leochko. During my search for information about the shark anatomy, I was amazed to discover the ways fisheries use based on the fear of sharks and the shark anatomy based products to save seabirds.
