Vitamin D Deficiency: Information for Cancer Patients
(PRWEB) May 25, 2008 -- The Bone and Cancer Foundation (www.boneandcancerfoundation.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing understanding of cancer involving bones, has published a new patient information guide entitled, "Vitamin D Deficiency: Information for Cancer Patients." It is available free online or in print.
"Not only is the risk of vitamin D deficiency high worldwide in general," stated Charlene Waldman, Executive Director of the Foundation, "but also the risk of vitamin D deficiency among patients with all types of cancer is extremely common. Because of the potential effects of vitamin D deficiency on cancer patients, it is very important that they are aware and have the information needed to communicate effectively with their physician about this."
According to the Foundation, studies in the United States, Europe, India, Australia, South America, and Southeast Asia have shown that approximately 50 percent of children and adults are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency.
"Vitamin D Deficiency: Information for Cancer Patients," provides patients with authoritative information in an easy-to-read format. It has been reviewed by a panel of experts chaired by Dr. David Roodman, Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair for Research, Department of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Director of the Myeloma Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
This publication will help patients communicate with their physician about the test for vitamin D deficiency, symptoms of vitamin D deficiency and how to maintain the proper vitamin D level.
"Vitamin D Deficiency: Information for Cancer Patients," and several other patient information booklets are available online at www.boneandcancerfoundation.org at no charge. Printed copies of all Bone and Cancer Foundation patient education publications are available by calling 212-509-5188, toll free 888-862-0999 or by email at bcfdn@aol.com.
