Senile cataracts are a visual impairment brought about by the gradual and progressive thickening of the ocular lens which leads to the loss of lens? transparency, slowly diminishing a person?s ability to see clearly. In the U.S. alone, at least 300, 000 ? 400, 000 new cataract cases occur annually. This disease is a common cause of blindness in elderly people when not treated. A comprehensive eye examination which includes visual acuity test (vision exam at various distances), dilated eye exam and tonometry (measurement of the pressure inside the eye) is needed to detect cataracts. The most common treatment is surgery in which the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called intraocular lens (IOL). Intraocular lens is a clear plastic lens which can focus light clearly on to the retina once again. Cataract surgery is not totally without risk however, as opacification of the posterior lens capsule occurs in 30-50% of patients within 2 years of surgical cataract removal and require secondary laser treatment; further 0.8% experience retinal detachments, approximately 1% are re-hospitalized for corneal problems, and about 0.1% develop endophthalmitis.
