Changing Lives by Finding the Sunny Side of Men

He indeed is getting the most out of life who does the most to elevate mankind; changing lives with God's love. How happy were those Little Sisters of the Poor at Tours, who took scissors to divide their last remnant of bed clothing with an old woman who came to them at night, craving hospitality! And how happy was that American school teacher who gave up the best room in the house, which she had engaged long before the season opened at a mountain sanitarium during the late war, taking instead of it the poorest room in the house, that she might give good quarters to a soldier just out of his camp hospital!

There are eight common excuses for not helping the poor or for finding their sunny side:

They don't deserve help; They got themselves into poverty, let them get themselves out; God's call to help the poor applies to another time; We don't have any poor people; I have my own needs; Any money that I give will be wasted, stolen or spent on other things and the poor will never see it; I may become a victim myself; I don't know where to start and I don't have time; My little bit won't make any difference.

In Exodus 22, God insisted that the poor and powerless be well-treated and given the chance to restore their fortunes. We should be helping those less fortunate than ourselves in order to change their lives.

In Leviticus 25, we learn that neglecting the poor was a sin. Poverty was not allowed in Israel. Individuals were responsible to help and house those in need. When we are overwhelmed by the size of the problem of poverty, many times we do nothing. It is not because we lack compassion. We just don't know where to begin.

God doesn't expect us to eliminate poverty, nor does he expect us to neglect our family while providing for others. He does expect us to reach out with whatever help we can offer when we see an individual in need.

How do we find "real life"? Does it come from how we look, what we eat or drink, where we go or what we do in our leisure time? These things may satisfy our appetite but not our deepest longings. Unless we change our priorities, we are left empty and dissatisfied. As our friendship with God deepens, so does our strength of character, peace of mind and deep satisfaction. Our lives are changed.

In times of abundance, we find it easy to take credit for our prosperity and begin to feel that our own hard work and cleverness have made us rich. It is easier yet to get so busy managing our wealth that we push God right out of our life.

It is God who blesses us with abundance. It is God who asks us to manage it for him. When you forget God, you will eventually lose all that you have. The most valuable things in life are your relationship with God and eternal life. They are free.

When you go about your day, be on the lookout for someone in need and take the opportunity to find their sunny side. Through God's grace within you, you have the power to change the course of their lives.
