Don't Let the Wrong Keywords Take you Broke! Give Yourself the Gift of More Pay Per Click Traffic for the Holidays

(PRWEB) December 18, 2004 -- Frenzied shoppers are not terribly discriminating about which links they click on when they are in a hurry to find that perfect gift. If you advertise the keyword "children's toys", for example, you could get clobbered. What if what you actually sell is "children's educational toys" and, to be more specific "children's pre-school educational toys", then the chances are that about 90% or more of the clicks that you receive on "children's toys" aren't going to even be prospects. If you're paying top dollar for the "children's toys" keyword phrase, and most of your traffic is not applicable, you better have a hefty margin for those sales that you do make or you're going to end up being the person with the huge holiday bills come January 1st.

Here's a good strategy to follow during the holidays when PPC traffic goes through the roof.

Watch your click through and conversion rates carefully. If you find that you are drawing a lot of clicks and low conversions, drop the keyword. You goal isn't to generate a lot of traffic, it's to generate a lot of sales.

Choose keywords which reflect the needs of the holiday shopper. If you are currently advertising "computer games" try "computer game gifts" or "holiday video games", or even "video game gift ideas". The goal is to associate your product with the traditional gift-giving holidays.

If you have added seasonal items to your inventory then update your campaigns to reflect these additions. Likewise, if you have removed or depleted inventory then stop those related campaigns. No sense paying for traffic to non-existent products.

The most important tip of all is to be clever enough to find competitive "niche" keyword phrases with a high demand and low competition. With a little bit of effort you can discover keywords which are generating a decent amount of traffic but, because the major advertisers haven't caught on to them, the bid prices are still low.

A good method of accomplishing this intensely profitable goal is to take each of your current keywords and then find the PPC equivalent of "synonyms" which are words or phrases which have similar meaning. Determine how much traffic each of these words are generating and then see what price they are being bid at. With a lot of work, and some luck, you should be able to lower your PPC costs and drive targeted holiday traffic to your site.

If it's too close to the holiday season, and you don't have time for the "lot of work" and the "little bit of luck" method, then you should consider using a tool which will do all of the work for you and remove the "luck" requirement from the equation all together.
